My grandmother lived through the Great Depression and lived by the adage, "Waste not, want not." When clothes wore out, she cut them into quilting scraps. Buttons went into a button jar. Nothing was wasted in her day. When Grandma died, a big box truck arrived at my door. I was four years old, and I remember the sights and sounds of that day very clearly. I sat on the sofa next to my mother, who tried to hide her tears. One of the items she pulled out of a big cardboard box was an old Mason jar, filled to the brim with buttons. This art print was created from a photo of some of those saved buttons - connections to a grandmother I barely had a chance to know.
Welcome! I am a nature photographer and mixed media artist, inspired by the colors, patterns, and textures God wove into our amazing world. Before I took up art, I spent 30+ years working for both mainstream and inspirational publishers writing books, curriculum, Hallmark cards, columns (Newsday), and magazine articles. My 21 years as a military wife fed my love for travel and adventure. We lived six years in Germany and in three regions of the U.S., eventually settling in the lush green Willamette Valley of Oregon, which we have called Home for the past 33-plus years. Faith, family, and the great outdoors. Life is good and I feel very blessed! Visit my Instagram feed for...

Awwww, aren't those precious memories? Many years ago, who would have thought how special those simple objects would be to us? (One of my mom's favorite songs was "Precious Mem'ries"...now I see why.) Thank you, Debbie.

What a wonderful story and shot!! My mom did the same thing, and I still cut buttons off old clothes. I dont cut the old clothes up, but I remember my mom cutting them into strips and crocheing them into rugs using a big wooden hook she carved out of an old wooden spoon handle, I still have the hook and it is so precious to me.
